Unless growing using hydroponics or airoponics the plant's roots are one part of the plant that is seldom seen. This makes them easy to forget despite thier importance to plant health and yields. A strong root system will permiate the entire growth subtrate and allow for a high rate of transpiration, nutrient absorption. If the root system rots then a plant will surely perish.

The rhizosphere is the area around the roots where the roots interact with the subtrate chemically and biologically. This is where symbiotic microbes and mycorrizhal fungus thrive and interact with the roots.
