Seeds that are not already feminised can be either male or female and its not possible to tell just from its outer appearance. A few weeks into the [[Life Stages#Vegatitive|vegatitive phase]] plants will start to exibit physical expressions of sex. Growers who are trying to produce buds need to grow female plants, male cannabis plants are generally reserved for breeding purposes. If a plant is stressed it may display physical characteristics of both male and female plants, this is known as a hermaphrodite.
